As you may or may not know, we have built a third story on to the Academy, and in January, all the rooms will be occupied by the students. This third story includes a couple rooms for our technical education program, a large room for traditional tech programs (think electricity, carpentry… those kind of programs) and a brand new beautiful library!
This week, our librarian, Steve, is hard at work moving all the books in, sorting them by fiction, nonfiction, reading level and interests. We’re so excited to have the kids see the books in early January when they come back to school!
It’s important to know that this will be a brand new experience for our kids… this is really the first “public” library they will have seen. Most libraries, if you can find one around here, keep the books literally behind bars. And because books are heavily taxed by Guatemalan standards, they are financially beyond the reach of all of our students. Most likely they have seen very few books in homes, and few if any have books of their own. So clearly this will be something very exciting for all of our students!
Stay tuned for more updates about the school!
